Trying to Find a Person But Not Sure Where to Start?

I’m on a mission to reconnect with someone I lost touch with years ago, but I honestly have no idea where to start anymore. We used to chat online all the time, but he kind of disappeared around 2018 and I haven’t been able to find him since. I’ve done the usual searches on social media, but came up empty. All I’ve got to go on is a username, a couple of old pictures, and a few details about where he might have lived.

Are there any trustworthy tools or techniques for finding someone without crossing any privacy lines? I’m definitely not trying to be weird just genuinely hoping to reconnect and if anyone here managed to find someone in a similar situation? I’d really appreciate any advice, resources, or suggestions.

Thanks

Check old usernames on sites like Findthatcheater.com or KnowEm. You’d be surprised how many people reuse usernames across platforms

Try Google reverse image search with those old pics. Might show up on obscure forums or blogs

Whitepages, Spokeo, and Findthatcheter are decent if you have at least a last name + general location. Stick with free tools before going deeper

If you met on an old forum or chatroom, see if that site has archives or user activity logs. Some niche sites keep old data surprisingly well

After 12 years, I reconnected with a friend from high school on LinkedIn. It took me a second to recognize her she no longer goes by the nickname we all used back then, just her full name now. Time really does change things!

I managed to track down someone I used to talk to on an old gaming forum by digging through archived threads and cross-referencing old usernames with newer accounts. It felt like digital archaeology—tedious, but strangely satisfying once the pieces came together

I tried this and it was a mixed bag. Found the person eventually, but they’d changed so much we didn’t have much in common anymore

Sometimes all it takes is posting a message in those old online communities where you both used to hang out. You’d be surprised people still lurk, and someone might recognize your username or remember the connection

I’ve actually been on the receiving end of this kind of digital reunion. Someone messaged me through an ancient DeviantArt account I barely remembered logging into. It felt surreal, but also incredibly meaningful. I couldn’t believe they remembered me and cared enough to reach out

what you’re feeling is completely normal and incredibly human. It takes courage to reach out or dig deeper, especially when emotions are involved. Just lead with empathy and respect. Sending good vibes your way you’re doing great

Same here. Been trying to find a friend I lost touch with back in 2016. It’s a weird mix of hope and nostalgia

Don’t write it off just yet. People have a habit of popping back into your life at the most unexpected moments. You never know when someone might check an old account, stumble across your name, or just decide to reach out again

Whether or not your search leads to a reunion, the effort itself speaks volumes about your character. It shows that you value connection, that you care deeply, and that you’re the kind of friend who doesn’t forget. That matters more than you know

I’ve got to ask what’s prompting you to reach out now after all this time? Just make sure it’s not nostalgia painting the past in softer colors than it really was. Sometimes we romanticize old connections without realizing it
